PRS-600 Used Reader, Battery Arrow

I just got a used PRS-600 at a thrift store. Looks like it's working properly- it mounts on my Macbook's desktop, the red light is still on, and it's displaying the USB Connected screen.

Only weird thing is it's showing an arrow pointing at the battery, and I've had it plugged in (to the Macbook) while playing WOW for over an hour, and it's still not showing any bars.

Is my battery kaput? Or do I just need to let it charge more?

Edit: Solved. I had to push the reset button to reset everything, and now it's working properly.

PRS-T1 Welcome Back Java

For the past several months I've kept Java off on my reader to prevent lock-ups when browsing Wikipedia (turning it on only when needed).

Today I discovered I can travel through Wikipedia with Java 'on' without fear again.

Just thought you all should know that they fixed whatever it was that caused that at 'pedia.

Now if Overdrive and Dropbox would support us again...

How to properly number books in a series in Calibre for a Sony PRS-505?

$

I have a Sony PRS-505 and am using Calibre to prepare the metadata. I am importing the files using regular expressions. The format is: <date> - <publisher> - <author> - <series> - <title> - <chapter>.pdf. But Calibre cannot accept a value for "chapter".

Most of the books are comic books, but since these files are too large, I split them by chapter, which makes them easier to read. So each chapter is a separate file. This means though that the titles are identical, e.g.:

- InuYasha
- InuYasha
- InuYasha

I need to set the metadata such that each of these are distinguishable. I don't want them to all appear with the same title. The number needs to appear.

If I set the <series_index> to 1, 2, 3, etc. for each chapter, will this be visible in the PRS-505? Or must I add the numbering data to the <title> itself?

What symbols can the Sony PRS-505 display?

I tried adding a book called InuYasha: The Final Act to my Sony PRS-505 using Calibre, but when I view the book title in the list of books on my device, it is renamed as InuYasha_ The Final Chapter. Is there a way to correct that? Besides A-Z, a-z, and 0-9, what symbols can the device display?

PRS-350 PRS-350 with PRS+and cyrillic issue

Hi all,

I have PRS-350 and some time ago I installed PRS+ ver.2.0.18. Everything worked well (I particularly used the cyrillic support).

Recently the reader started slowing down. As I had a lot of books uploaded, I decided to wipe everything out (Format Internal Memory) and load only the books I need (fairy tales to read to my kids, in cyrillic). I was quite surprised that after the Format Internal Memory and reloading the same EPUB files with the cyrillic text (from Calibre library), now I cannot see the contents in cyrillic - I see question marks instead. I am sure I was able to view these books before in cyrillic.

I decided to upgrade PRS+ to 2.1.02alpha (did it successfully), but still see the question marks - the upgrade did not help too.

Any thoughts about what could be wrong and how to correct it?

DPT-RP1 - device not pairing with Digital Paper App

Hi there,

I have just received my DTP-RP1 and am very excited.

However, having installed the software, when I try to pair the Digital Paper App with the reader, all I get is a message right after I plug the reader that says "Connecting to Digital Paper" (with a little rotating wheel telling me something is happening). The message appears for about 30 seconds before disappearing. Nothing more happens, and the device is not paired.

Any suggestion? I suspect this is a driver problem. I'm using Windows 7.

All help appreciated.

How do I change the fonts on PRS-650

I just picked up a PRS-650 from a garage sale in very good conditions. It looked very similar to my Sont PRS-T1, and it seems to be of better built quality. I just want to have a way to add custom fonts because I don't like the default one. I have already installed the PRS+ 650 firmware, but I'm at a loss what to do. I tried searching for this info in the PRS+ thread but 300 pages is just too overwhelming. I hope someone can provide me with quick directions.

PRS-350 Sony PRS-350 having problems, reboots constantly

I have a Sony PRS-350. Last night when I set it down after using it, it had 75% charge. This morning the battery was dead. Normally it just goes into "sleep" mode with no problems. But as I tried to charge it, it kept rebooting, which is probably why the battery went dead last night.

I tried hitting the reset button for 1 second and that didn't seem to change things. Then I tried holding Reset down for 10 seconds, and that didn't seem to change things either.

I have a cheap Chinese charger cord that changes a color as it's plugged in. While the cord reads 4.7vdc (within 10% tolerance), it does not charge, no amps seem to be going through it.

Another cord is currently charging the device as it now says "Charging battery". It is not constantly rebooting on this different charging cord. It is actually hooked to my PC so the 2 drives appear in Windows 8 while it's charging.

So, if the first Chinese cord is bad, could there be something else wrong with it? The battery is still original, as I got the device used.

Thanks!

Someone is selling the cracked version (Android 5.1.1) of Sony DPT RP1

I found it on a Chinese online shopping website (Taobao). The cracked version runs Android 5.1.1 and the seller claims that the Android system will not affect battery. The cracked version is only based on the Japanese version. Also, the cracked version seems quite pricey (7800 CNY=1,155USD).

PRS-T3 Custom on-board font help please

I've been trying to use some custom fonts without embedding them into the epubs and it doesn't seem to work for me. I think I must have made a typo somewhere so I'm hoping some fresh eyes can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

1) I copied some otf font files to my device in the folder:

READER/Sony_Reader/fonts

2) I added some @font-face definitions to the top of my stylesheet and referenced the font files I added:

Code:

@font-face {
    font-family: "Literata", serif;
    font-weight: normal;
    font-style:  normal;
    src: url(res:///ebook/fonts/../../mnt/sdcard/fonts/literata-regular.otf);
}

@font-face {
    font-family: "Literata", serif;
    font-weight: bold;
    font-style:  normal;
    src: url(res:///ebook/fonts/../../mnt/sdcard/fonts/literata-bold.otf);
}

@font-face {
    font-family: "Literata", serif;
    font-weight: normal;
    font-style:  italic;
    src: url(res:///ebook/fonts/../../mnt/sdcard/fonts/literata-italic.otf);
}

@font-face {
    font-family: "Literata", serif;
    font-weight: bold;
    font-style:  italic;
    src: url(res:///ebook/fonts/../../mnt/sdcard/fonts/literata-bold-italic.otf);
}

3) In my "body" style I use the added font:

Code:

body {
    font-family: "Literata", serif;
    margin: 5px;
}

Result:

I can't see any effect. The text is still all displayed in Amasis. I've tried using ttf fonts instead of otf and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

In case it matters, my firmware revision is 1.1.00.15210.

What am I doing wrong?

DPT-RP1 EULA Concerns

$

Hi, I’m getting tempted by the RP1. Stuff like having to use the App to transfer files (at the margin) and the absence of SD card based capacity expansion (mainly this) are irritants but I think they won’t be deal breakers.

What might be though was this … Amazon.com’s “most helpful” negative review slams the EULA (End User License Agreement) …
“disallowing opt out for data collection and providing themselves with permission to collect data not just from the Digital Paper itself but also from any device connected to the Digital Paper. The Digital Paper requires connection to a PC to operate (only way to load documents into the DP), meaning that Sony has effectively given itself permission to mine unspecified data from my PC and use it without any real restrictions, including expressly permitting themselves to share my data with unspecified third parties.”

I don’t really like the idea of e-readers themselves giving data (I maybe want to get updates from them but even those could really be sideloaded or done via the computer) but the idea of the company collecting (mining?) data from your PC, as presented here seems scary in potential scope.

Is there any indication of what it would be collecting? Could it just be checking on the performance of the device, collecting anonymous data for optimising and resolving bugs etc or is it (and has it not ruled out) collecting info on what I read and store and sell (or “lose”) such info or even far beyond as implied in the review …

On the one hand I feel like a conspiracy-nut and really want a fast, large screen (e-ink), PDF reader and I think this might be it. On the other the review spooked me hugely that I wouldn’t be able to control what data the company collects from my PC.

Does anyone have any (informed?) opinions? Is what Sony is doing normal? Is the review dealing in hyperbole? Are Sony giving themselves “permission to mine unspecified data” and if so any ideas what that might mean in practice? Any purchasers had any concerns?

Sorry for the rambling. Thanks for any help etc in advance.

Why is the older model more expensive than the newer model on eBay? Help me understand. Are there features on the S1 than more desirable?
